so tell me, how much do you think limes are, per kilo?

i'm going to tell you a story but first, tell me (without cheating) how much limes are a kilo.

also, tell me what the difference is between lemon juice and lime juice. has anyone done a taste test? is there a palpable difference? will a recipe be ruined if one uses lemon juice instead of lime juice?

i await your comments.

My local charges by the lime, not by the kilo. They would not want to try this with bananas just now.

The difference between lemon juice and lime juice lies in the little known fact that pancakes taste far better with lime and sugar than lemon and sugar.

Trust me on this. It will change (a very small part of) your life.

$28.00

I've just tried to find out how much they are by Googling and can't find anywhere that sells them by the kilo. Safeway homeshop has them for the criminal price of $1.83 each, which would make them about $36.00 per kilo. Surely no-one would pay that. I stop buying limes after 70c each. The taste is different to lemons but for the price I think those limes have tickets on themselves. Expensive tickets.

Depends on the time of year. Sometimes lemons are cheaper, sometimes limes are.

Lime and frangelico is way nicer than lemon and frangelico and worth paying extra for that alone.

Right now I think ours are ~$17 a kilo. In summer you can buy 10 for $2 though.

Interesting to see how this research goes!!!

Yeah, they cost so much in singles, I never even thought of buying them by the kilo.

Can you tell the difference? Yes. But for a cheap alternative you can buy/steal lime leaves by the packet from the Chinese grocer and leave them in the freezer if you don't use them all. Not the same as limes either, but a similarly delicate taste.

yes thirdcat. but what if the recipe calls for lime leaves AND lime zest and juice? i already got the leaves yesterday. i have frozen the remainder in two little packets for the future.

i think the answer to this is to only cook something requiring limes in the summer. that's all.

Oh, my goodness. I've just realised what I said! I didn't mean steal the lime leaves from the Chinese grocer. I meant from a tree branch overhanging your neighbour's fence.

Also, you can buy those little bottles of lime juice from the supermarket, but I've tried that and it isn't that great.

NINE DOLLARS NINETY FOR FOUR LIMES???

Out-fucking-rageous.

I'm so outraged I had to use capitals, bold and italics.

And I swore.

Sorry about that.

First bananas, now limes... I think I'm going to go and live on a tropical island.

Having recently lived in a tropical country awash with limes I am struggling to give them up. They are highly superior to lemons when coupled with gin and tonic.
Buy one at a time and savour them in your drink!

hi melbourne girl,

that's an extortionate price. but i think limes (unfortunately) do make a difference. i remember buying fresh lime juice with crushed ice from a street vendor in malaysia (at a fraction of that price obviously) and it was a world away from lemon juice.
still... at that price lemons will definitely do for cooking, i reckon!
