Sexism in comic panels

These are from Gabby's Playhouse  and are a clear, visual representation of why I (a) usually avoid articles on sexism and (b) especially can't bear to read the comments about articles on sexism.

And these helpful panels, so that commenters to the above can avoid being human clichés:

While I don't completely agree with everything in this comic -- especially the defeatist nature of the last two panels -- I do think this is a pretty neat comic.

The layout and visual flow is really nice and I also like the limited colour pallet (black, white, pink and blue) and how it's used to establish tone and convey information rather than just to look nice or emulate reality. Things I really miss from a lot of modern comics.

And don't get me wrong, I like the idea behind it too. In fact, it's pretty much the kind of stuff I'd like to be able to make myself if I were to hypothetically do a web thing. ... If I were that good at coming up with ideas. ... In theory.

Hi Alex, I didn't get the 'host' one does it mean people just ignoring what's going on and in effect, enabling the shit? And the 'yes it's funny, moving on now' one I saw as OK, ie we don't need to respond and react and get het up about everything. But I'm not sure. I also love the palette of colours, very cool. And just funny funny funny. And real. I have come across most of those cliches.

Glad you liked it too Sarah.

I have to admit that I don't find the last two as obvious as the rest, either.

My immediate take on the "gracious host": The butler figure represents a civil, courteous, possibly obsequious type of person, who stands outside the fracas, but serves alcohol to the participants (fuel to the fire)?

However ... if you read the blurb underneath:

These were sort of an afterthought to the sexism comic we drew, after it was flooded with hundreds of extremely opinionated comments. The original commentary to these have been lost, but we’re sure you get the idea.

My take from this is that they were originally drawn as a response to a particular page of comments, rather than as a response to general internet commentary everywhere. Therefore, some of the humour might have been directed at something specific, which then loses some meaning when one tries to apply it more broadly.

So maybe the "gracious host" thing is self-referential. Being the end panel (the punchline of punchlines) a little bit of self-deprecation would make sense.

Perhaps "best case scenario" means that short compliments from people who only posted once was as good as that particular conversation ever got in terms of civility.

In other words, I dunno.

Hey Melbs, I just saw that SBS has a movie up that I was absolutely crazy about when I first saw it about ten years ago. Thought it might be up your alley too. It's one of those "awkward first love" movies from Taiwan. According to the site, it'll be up for another nine days, if you're interested.

Oh, and they've also got a doco about cosmetic surgery called "The Perfect Vagina", but I think you might have seen that one. I know someone was telling me about it.

And while I'm linking to videos: I just saw this on TED. I don't know if you do body image stuff in your sex-ed classes, but I thought this was really good, and all TED stuff is put up under a Creative Commons license.

Hey Alex thanks for all these links, will check them out tomorrow now I have a little more time.

While I'm at it here's something your brother might like. ... And you too. Maybe. Depending on whether you get all the nerdy tech references. In either case, I thought it was too good not to share.

Just watched Blue Gate Crossing, oh how beautiful. Made me cry at the end, simply wonderful film. Thank you for linking! Haven't checked the other links yet, will come back.

And I forwarded that link for the Gates vs Jobs rap battle to my bro and my husband - both IT/computer men. Funny, my dad was one of the first computer men in Melbourne... sounds like Mad Men but Main[frame] Men. God I'm funny.
