What I am sick of and what I want more of

Sick of:

- cats (on twitter, everywhere). Really they're okay but they're not that good
- people talking about the Superbowel and Beyonce, though it is getting less. I wrote Superbowel on purpose
- people talking about the Baftas/Emmys/Golden Globes/Oscars
- Chrissie Swan and the smoking thing
- sprays about sexism
- celebrity chefs and their food
- people who are defined by their children and just want to bleat about it all the time, everywhere
- any and all comments on any and all article on The Age online
- The Age online
- people and their Apple products
- people and their cheap alcohol, wanting me to drink it and not turn my nose up
- people who don't take out the recycling even when it's piled up so high in the kitchen it slides off onto the floor
- likewise people who don't seem to notice that walking on our carpet will mean you get strands of hair (yes, mine ok) kind of wrapped around your toes and that THIS means it's time to vacuum

More of:
- photos of Brooklyn and New York in snow
- articles on the illuminati and Hollywood (just read a very interesting piece in The Paris Review on Stanley Kubrick's 'murder' four days after he delivered the final edits of Eyes Wide Shut to the something-or-rather). You can read it here.
- soba noodles
- sunny weather with a cool breeze but not too cool
- helvetica-type fonts
- GIRLS episodes
- Game of Thrones
- Chardonnay
- Vodka
- smoked salmon
- whole rainbow trout cooked in the oven with slices of lemon in the cavity and butter and diced garlic rubbed into the slashes you've made on one side of the skin with a sharp knife, probably the one you use for fruit is best

This looks fun. Like the stuff we used to get on TSSH or one of its predecessors. I loves a good old fashioned shit list.

Thoughts:

1) Cats: Sometimes it does feel good not to be on Twitter.
2) I'm totally using superbowel from now on. Beyonce's a person, right?
3) I don't hold anything against people who are into award ceremonies, but I find them wanky. Actually, I find a lot of ceremonies wanky.
4) ???
5) I'll try to watch what I say on the subject.
6) Didn't you just write a post about loving Master Chef or some shit?
7) Well, at least I know I'm not guilty of that one.
8 & 9) Take your own advice and don't read it. I took your own advice about not reading it and haven't looked back. It was good advice.
10) Oh fuck, I got an email today that made me very sad and angry. One of my teacher rellies forwarded me a letter that a grade one teacher at their (public) school sent out at the start of the year, advising parents about things they should get for and do with their children to improve their learning. When you strip it down, it's basically a long, long list of "apps" that may as well have been punctuated with the line "... and if your kid doesn't have an iPad, they don't deserve an education, you impoverished loser scumbag." Cunts.
11) This problem is beyond my comprehension.
12 & 13) I ripped up my carpet and replaced it with panels because I think carpet is filthy and uncleanable. And you can't ignore a dirty panelled floor.

Sunny weather with a nice breeze is great. The other stuff sounds nice too.

I tell you what is very nice. Smoked trout on a crusty roll with a little salad and a port-soaked fig (chopped) washed down with ginger beer

1) Cats: Sometimes it does feel good not to be on Twitter. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE
2) I'm totally using superbowel from now on. Beyonce's a person, right? YES. YES SHE IS. A SINGER PERSON. SUPERBOWEL IS GOOD ISN'T IT?
3) I don't hold anything against people who are into award ceremonies, but I find them wanky. Actually, I find a lot of ceremonies wanky. YEAH THEY ARE BUT I LIKE THE OSCARDS
4) ??? SHE'S A MINOR KNOWN PERSON (EX BB AND CURRENT RADIO PERSON) PREGNANT WITH CHILD AND SPRUNG HAVING A SMOKE IN THE CAR
5) I'll try to watch what I say on the subject. NAH, YOU'RE FINE. I'M JUST STAYING OUT OF IT ALL CAUSE IT'S NEVER ENDING
6) Didn't you just write a post about loving Master Chef or some shit? YES, YES I DID. HYPOCRITICAL I KNOW
7) Well, at least I know I'm not guilty of that one.
8 & 9) Take your own advice and don't read it. I took your own advice about not reading it and haven't looked back. It was good advice. I KNOW. WHAT ARE YOUR LINKS TO GOOD NEWS AGAIN?
10) Oh fuck, I got an email today that made me very sad and angry. Cunts. EXACTLY.
11) This problem is beyond my comprehension. DON'T WORRY. IS THAT BECAUSE YOU DON'T DRINK OR YOU DRINK ANYTHING?
12 & 13) I ripped up my carpet and replaced it with panels because I think carpet is filthy and uncleanable. And you can't ignore a dirty panelled floor. THIS IS TRUE.

And hi squib!! Where are you in the world? Some news?? Your salmon rolls sounds quite Enid Blyton. Are in Old Blighty somewhere?

Let me add sick of the Pope to my list. It is twitter that's doing it. I just need to unfollow people who talk about this stuff.

Aberdeen, Melbs. We moved here (as you do) and now we're looking for a house to buy

Melba said...

Scotland or NSW? I'm confused? I had a Chrissy card bounce back from your PO Box. Hope you're all well. You need to be settled before the next birthday party, don't you?

squib said...

Sorry - I thought I told you I was moving. Scotland. Very happy here. Yes, already thinking about the birthday party and wondering if we will still be renting then

Melba said...

You probably did and I just don't remember. Glad you are happy. Wow a big move. You're not blogging are you? Or anything'ing?

2) I think so.

4) Oh, the horror! Someone notify the U.N.

8 & 9) Bloody good question that I wish I had a definitive answer to. Here's a rundown of what I've found so far:

As far as serious, first-hand coverage of world events goes, I think Al Jazeera is about the only game left in town. Most of the other networks seem to just re-run their stories. I highly recommend checking out their program archives, too. For a critical eye on The West, there's RT; their resident raving lunatic economist Max Keiser never fails to put a smile on my face.

Local news is a bit trickier. The best I can find for news analysis (if not first hand reporting) is probably The Conversation, Club Troppo, and The New Matilda, possibly in that order.

And if you're in the mood for some vitriolic ranting of dubious merit, you can check out either Independent Australia or the site that Slippery Pete himself reckons gets it right more than the mainstream media, VexNews.

Have fun with those and let me know if you find anything else.

11) Went from one extreme to the other, really. Having said that, there was stuff that I never had a taste for (VB, Bundy), but it certainly didn't have anything to do with it being cheap.

You know, I heard the Pope was on Twitter, but I didn't think you'd be following him.

Alex said...

Hey Squib, is Scotland leaving the UK or what? What's the general feeling where you are at the moment?

Alex said...

Speaking of news, we currently have blanket coverage of the release of serial sex offender Robert Fardon up in this neck of the woods; which means I have now seen this image, in both video and still form, for the seventy millionth time since 2007. Its become bloody iconic.

And I'm looking at it and all I can think is ... why's that woman helping him cover his face?

I don't want to know her identity, and I don't think she's done anything wrong or should be judged or ridiculed or persecuted for associating with him or anything like that. I mean more like, is she a social worker of some kind? Does she know him personally and feel sorry for him? What motivates someone (especially a woman) to have anything at all to do with, let alone give comfort to, this kind of fella?

Melba said...

Interesting, that image hasn't made the news down here as far as I know. All I can say about the woman is (and I'm not saying this about her specifically) - there are mothers who let their husbands/partners sexually abuse their own children because either they are too scared of him to try to protect the child or they are complicit in other ways. Denial or whatever can be a big reason why people act or don't act in certain ways.

Maybe she's a sister, maybe she's a friend. Maybe she thinks even though he's done contemptible things he's deserving of some compassion. I don't know the story and I'm not going to google it because I don't want it in my head, but some people can often argue another side, and I can think of some reasons why a person who cares about a person like him would help cover his face.

And I'm not following the Pope on twitter, it's everyone else was talking about him. They've moved on. Yesterday it was Obama's State of the Union and today it's Valentine's Day thus far. It's kind of empirically fascinating to see what the trends are in my feed; I don't even look at hashtag trends.

PS remind me to post about the Tarantino kill chart I just came across, I just don't want to push the bobby pins lead story off the 'front page' just yet.

Hey Alex, I don't know. I've been asking questions more along the lines of, 'Does that macaroni cheese pie REALLY have macaroni cheese in it?'

Alex said...

You mean "As opposed to dodgy horse meat" Squib?
